The methodology and stress indicators used in the World Stress Map (WSM) project are discussed. The general characteristics of the data set are described, and an overview of both first- and second-order broad-scale stress patterns identified in the data is provided. These patterns are described in terms of the constraints that they place on the relative importance and magnitude of forces acting on and within the lithosphere and also on their relationship to the lithosphere's structure. A methodology is developed to use rotations of the maximum horizontal stress due to local geological and tectonic structures to constrain regional horizontal stress magnitude differences. This analysis serves as an example of how stress orientation data compiled in the WSM may be exploited in the future to constrain in situ stress magnitudes at seismogenic depths.
