A thermochemical model combining lithospheric dynamics and mantle convection is employed to assess the contribution of the continental lithospheric mantle and other phenomena to the composition of continental flood basalts. Treatment is given to the possibility that impingement of a mantle plume with the base of the lithosphere could account for the basaltic magmas within the lithosphere. The amount of magma derived from this effect and/or by other direct melting of the lithospheric mantle is shown to be small compared to the contribution of the asthenosphere or plume. The thermal models indicate that crustal contamination modifies the compositions of continental flood basalts (CFBs). The distinctive isotopic and chemical signatures of the CFBs are theorized to be produced by selective extraction of incompatible trace elements during reaction between magma and metasomatized peridotite.
