The apparition was remarkable for the bizarre pattern of belts and zones. These dramatic changes developed within less than a year and created a strange and colourful picture, quite unlike the familiar banded and largely colourless planet of the previous apparition. The SEB almost completely disappeared, as the STB and NTB had done in previous apparitions. Conversely the Great Red Spot became strongly reddish, and the northern Equatorial Zone became dusky with a vivid yellow colour. The only substantial belts were the NEB, SSTB, and a northern belt segment referred to as the 'North Temperate Disturbance'. An energetic outbreak on the NTBs jetstream, displaying a wide range of speeds, led to a revival of the NTB. Spots were also detected in the NNTBs and SSTBn jetstreams. Photographs revealed several small colourful spots in the STropZ, including a newly forming 'little red spot'.
