The supergiant x-ray binaries 4U 1700-37 and Vela X-1 were detected during the Rosat all sky survey with an average count rate of about 1 count/sec. The x-ray spectra can be fitted with a Bremsstrahlung model with a temperature of 0.5 keV. The x-ray spectrum in the Rosat PSPC (Position Sensitive Proportional Counter) band is consistent with the soft component seen during a Ginga observation of 4U 1700-37. The survey light curve for both sources indicate an eclipse of the soft component which continues after eclipse egress of the hard x-ray source. The low absorption of the soft component suggests that it originated far out in the stellar wind.
