The extension of the energy output from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) throughout the whole electromagnetic spectrum is addressed. The relevance of space observations for the understanding of this phenomenon is illustrated by describing some of the results obtained with Exosat and Ginga on their X-ray emission. In particular spectral properties and variability are reviewed along with their most immediate implications for model pictures of AGN.
