For metallic cylinders with a conductivity sigma = 10 exp 18/s and length to radius ratios in the range 3 x 10 exp 4 to 3 x 10 exp 5 the Mie-type solution for the absorption coefficient merges smoothly, with a domain of overlap, into the Rayleigh solution. The absorption effects are then shown to be rigorously determined at all wavelengths. A cosmological application is briefly discussed.
