The hot X-ray emitting gas of elliptical galaxies is considered as an open system with mass and energy sources, which are determined by stellar mass losses, supernovae explosions and radiative gas cooling. The possibility of formation of local sinks due to the growth of condensational instabilities is also taken into account. Study of the dynamics of this essentially nonlinear system within the framework of large-scale uniform model proved that the steady states of the system are generally unstable. The results of numerical simulations showed that in a reasonable domain of the parameter space stable periodic solutions exist. They describe the cyclic process of gas accumulation and heating due to the stellar sources with subsequent gas cooling and dropping out of the halo. This cyclic evolutionary regime is caused by the properties of radiative cooling of optically thin plasma enriched with heavy elements. The results may be considered evidence of possible instability of some steady-state cooling-flow models and should be taken into account when interpreting the results of calculations of more complicated time-dependent models with sink terms. A quadratic relationship of X-ray and optical luminosities is derived on the basis of dimensional analysis. This relationship explains the observed correlation.
