An observation of a total solar eclipse made by a party of Chinese travellers in Mongolia in A.D. 1221 is discussed in detail. By carefully locating the position of the party using accurate modern maps of the area, an upper limit to the earth's rotational clock error of 970 s at this period is derived. It may thus be deduced that the length of the day in A.D. 1221 was no more than 9.2 ms (milliseconds) shorter than the current standard reference value.
