The high mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-377 was observed four times in 1990-1991 by the SIGMA telescope at energies greater than 35 keV. The source, detected up to 170 keV, exhibits a strong flaring activity, reaching the luminosity of 0.6 Crab in the 40-74 keV energy band during nearly 20 min on September 12. No significant periodicity has been found between 10 and 6000 s, or at the previously reported periods (67.4 s, 24, and 97 min). The hard X-ray spectrum, well described by a thermal bremsstrahlung model with kT of about 45 keV, does not vary significantly as a function of the source intensity.
