The line profile variations in the He I λ5876 line in the spectrum of the massive X-ray binary HD 153919/ 4U 1700-37 have been studied using 21 high resolution (R=30,000) Reticon spectra taken in 1981. The profile varies substantially from night to night, and the absorption component of the profile has some interesting structure. The photospheric contribution to the observed profile was removed by subtracting the He I profile of a star of similar spectral type. The subtraction revealed a double emission peak at φ˜0.34, but no second emission peak was conclusively seen at other phases. The subtraction also revealed that the absorption component at φ˜0.75 is almost completely dominated by absorption due to the disturbance trailing the x-ray source. The equivalent width and radial velocity of the emission component do not vary a great deal with the orbital phase. The strength of the absorption component varies more with orbital phase than does the emission component. The absorption velocities vary substantially, changing by ˜500 km/s through an orbital cycle.
