I will present new results on the fueling of the central regions of galaxies using very recently obtained data (SAURON, OASIS, VLT, HST), and new modelling. I will demonstrate the specific roles of m=2 and m=1 density waves in this process, with specific cases of active (NGC 1068, NGC 4303, ...) and non active (NGC 3115, NGC 2974, ...) galaxies. These results will be discussed in the context of the evolution of late and early type spirals.
