Thermal He(2+) can be used to trace ions from the solar wind as they pass through the polar cusp. Thermal mass 2 ion (M/Q = 2) near the cusp region are identified as He(2+) from the solar wind using EXOS-D/SMS. The distribution of the high-occurrence probability of large He(2+) fluxes depends upon the location and configuration of the cusp region. However, under positive IMF-By conditions, He(2+) ions typically appear in the morning sector. This appears to be related to the convection pattern, since the antisunward flow in the dayside is toward the morning sector.
