We present a survey for molecular hydrogen in damped Lyman-alpha systems
at redshift larger than 2. We show that presence of dust and high
particle density are necessary ingredient for the formation of
molecules. Properties of the gas are compared with what is measured in
the local ISM from FUSE observations.
