Observations of the H_2_O maser associated with the far infrared point source IRAS00338+6312 are presented. The H_2_O maser emission can be assigned to an unresolved source, which is located at the formal position of IRAS00338+6312. Evidence that the central source responsible for the maser emission is a young stellar object located within 0.2" of the maser position comes from near infrared polarimetry and VLA radio continuum observations. It is suggested that this object is the driving source of the associated bipolar molecular outflow, and is responsible for the H_2_O maser and the far infrared emission detected by IRAS, contrary to former investigations assigning these signs of star formation to the closeby FUOrionis stars RNO1B and RNO1C. Associated 18cm OH maser emission could not be detected.
