Using the results of CCD surface photometry for a sample of 284 spiral galaxies, the problem of internal extinction is reinvestigated. Empirical formulas for the face-on correction of isophotal diameter, the I-band magnitude, and the V-I color are derived. It is pointed out that the integrated absorption in a galaxy does not follow the extinction law that applies to individual stars in the galaxy, a simple fact which has been overlooked by many investigators.
