A simplex method is proposed for fitting the line profiles of solar prominences. The use of this method avoids the need for calculating the derivative of the objective function. To demonstrate the method, it is used to fit the asymmetric and symmetric line profiles of the loop prominence of Feb 18, 1984. The results obtained are compared with those obtained by the steepest descent method. The largest error of the optical depth at the line center is estimated at 18.2 percent.
