We have observed (HD 215441) Babcock's star for 16 years with high time resolution, using an image tube spectrograph, and have obtained nearly 2600 spectra with a linear reciprocal dispersion of about 40 A/mm, ranging from 3800A to 6800A. We demonstrate the constancy of the amplitude and phase of equivalent width variations for several metallic and hydrogen lines, based on the photometrically known rotation period of 9.4871d, over the time span of our observations. Babcock's star is, following Alpha Cir, the second CP2 star for which the long-term stability of spots in the atmosphere has been demonstrated. Furthermore, we derive the wavelength dependency of the hydrogen line equivalent width changes and reconcile the hitherto published contradicting evidence. Finally, we can demonstrate that no significant atmospheric activity or pulsation on time scales ranging from a few hours to several minutes was present during our observations, up to a 2 percent level in intensity and averaged over typically 500mA wide pixels.
