Close encounters between star clusters and initially spherical molecular clouds in the Galactic plane are studied numerically. The full hydrodynamics of the cloud as well as the stellar dynamics of the cluster are included. The simulation results are compared with an improved version of the impulse approximation which is also valid for close encounters. With a realistic spectrum of cloud and encounter parameters taken into account, it is found that cluster lifetimes are limited to l00 Myears due to catastrophic encounters with the most massive clouds of the spectrum.
