We prepared a galaxy sample from the IRAS Point Source Catalog (PSC) for subsequent study in the ROSAT X-ray band. We summarize the methodology of the trainable statistical classifier of Meurs et al. (1988) which was applied to select extragalactic sources from the IRAS PSC. The classifier performance is assessed using Wolstencroft et al.'s (1986) and Leggett et al.'s (1987) identifications of IRAS objects in selected fields and by cross-correlating the galaxy sample with the SIMBAD catalog. The selected sample is less than 6 percent contaminated by galactic sources, allowing to undertake a study of statistical correlations with X-ray properties determined from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We compare the mean infrared colors of the IRAS galaxy sample with those derived for the two selected fields as an additional indicator of the quality of the selection.
