Emission-Line Stars
Scientific paper
Be stars are spectroscopically characterized by emission lines of hydrogen and metals, and their remarkable variations. Be stars are generally rapid rotators surrounded by circumstellar envelopes. Recent spectroscopic observations revealed the disk and ring structure, accompanied with phase changes of Be stars. Interferometric observations opened a new era for the detailed studies of circumstellar envelopes of Be stars. Surface magnetic fields have been measured for some Be stars, mostly around 100 G or less, but some stars show strong fields which are somehow related with chemically peculiar B stars. Evolutionary status of Be stars in and post main-sequence stages is still in debate. These problems are briefly reviewd.
