It is shown that reliable abundance determinations can be obtained by using strong iron lines. The accuracy of these determinations is comparable with with that obtained from weak and medium strong iron lines in K-giants in the blue region of the spectrum. Solar lines are analyzed, and a damping enhancement factor is derived in order to match model atmosphere predictions and observational data. Solar curves of growth and iron abundance are obtained, and the results are compared with data from K-giant observations and results. Uncertainties in model atmospheres, continuum tracing, and in the evaluation of equivalent widths are reviewed.
