The variety of both data and theoretical concepts pertinent to the origin of the solar system has prompted the question to be addressed by several scientific fields, rather than a single, coherent discipline. The relevant research can be divided into three categories: astronomical, dynamical and cosmochemical. NASA is offering astronomers the ability to make IR measurements from space telescopes of processes believed to be associated with star formation, while cosmochemists are to be offered detailed data on the composition of the outer solar system by a Galileo-based probe of the Jupiter atmosphere, and dynamicists have been aided by the Voyager observations of the Saturn rings, which demonstrate interactions between orbiting bodies and continua that must have occurred in the solar nebula.
