The forbidden S II (wavelength 4069 + 4076)/(wavelength 6716 + 6731) and the forbidden O II (wavelength 7320 + 7330)/(wavelength 3726 + 3729) ratios are used as reddening indicators, as suggested by Allen (1979). Level populations for O(+) and S(+) are calculated solving the five-level atom equilibrium equations analytically and numerically. Reddenings for 47 active galactic nuclei were estimated using new spectrophotometry obtained at Palomar together with previously published data. Nine of the nuclei have reddenings exceeding 0.5 mag; four of these are in narrow-line X-ray galaxies, and several are found in edge-on spirals with thick central dust lanes. Most of the Seyferts listed have reddenings of only several tenths or less in E(B-V). The average intrinsic hydrogen-alpha/hydrogen-beta and hydrogen-gamma/hydrogen-beta ratios in Seyfert 1 galaxies are 3.6 + or - 0.3 and 0.39 + or - 0.02.
