The first part of this examination of the possibility of generating gamma rays in a close binary system treats the case of systems containing a young pulsar. In these, high energy radiation should be efficiently produced at a shock front where the pulsar relativistic wind pressure equals primary star wind ram pressure. The expected number of such systems in the galaxy is evaluated. The second part of this paper is concerned with black hole models whose accretion rates are comparable to those that may occur in close binary systems. The gamma ray luminosity and spectrum indicate that the pion production process, where electrons and protons are thermally decoupled, is of little interest for explaining the gamma-ray sources discovered by the COS-B satellite. Accretion models possessing a particle energy distribution nonthermal component may be relevant to gamma-ray astronomy.
