The methods used to calculate the masses of nearby visual double stars and of the components of eclipsing binaries are discussed, taking the accuracy of the orbital measurements and distance estimates into account. The spectral type, absolute magnitude, luminosity, and mass are listed for a number of stars, in tables based on the survey of Popper (1980). The empirical mass-luminosity relationship is illustrated with a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
