Actual profiles have for the first time been obtained of the high excitation C I 5052-A line from individual granules and intergranular regions, and Doppler shifts between the two regions. Although these structures are only partially resolved, due to smearing by instrumental and atmospheric stray light, a simple correction for this effect points to convective velocities of a few kilometers/sec in the photospheric layers where the 'white light' granulation is observed. It is not yet possible, however, to determine the absolute values of the upward and downward velocities in the graduation and the possible influence of the five-min oscillation.
