The author investigates the evolution of contact systems and tries to produce models in "good" thermal contact (nearly equal entropies and effective temperatures). He modifies the energy transfer formula so that it allows large energy transfer even when the entropy difference is small. The author "improves" the formulation of the TRO (thermal relaxation oscillation) theory and investigates the stability and evolution of an equilibrium system having unequal components in poor thermal contact. Further, he studies the influence of the different treatment (implicit or explicit) of energy transfer on the evolution of contact models. Finally, he compares his results with the observational properties of W UMa stars and discusses the relation of the present paper to other theories of contact binaries, especially to the TRO theory.
