By numerical backward integration of stellar motions in the Galaxy it is found that 55 cepheids probably originated in the Sagittarius arm and in the Perseus arm if only the spiral field of the density wave is included. This confirms the linear theory of density waves. The amplitude of this wave is ≡10 per cent of the mean galactic field, and the pattern speed is 15 km/s kpc. It is shown that the result of calculations is not sensitive to the effect of some uncertainties in proper motions and cepheid ages.
