The pulsar emission mechanisms of Peng et al (1982), involving neutrino cyclotron radiation, and of Huang et al (1982), involving magnetic dipole radiation from superfluid vortexes in neutron stars, have previously been shown to provide a novel means for pulsar spindown in which the spindown rate is proportional to the square of the period. It is presently shown that the distribution of the pulsar periods could be straightforwardly explained in light of this novel mechanism. On the basis of this interpretation, it is suggested that there may be two types of pulsar which could be correlated with two types of supernova, and that magnetic decay is probably present.
