The paper considers the utility of the Re-187 - Os-187 pair of nuclides as a chronometer with which to study the chemical evolution of the Galaxy, in addition to its present interest in studies of solar system material. A simple one-zone model for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy in the solar neighborhood is formulated and compared with observations to derive a range for the age of the Galaxy. A model of the evolution of astrated Re-187 and Os-187 is then developed with particular emphasis on the stellar enhancement of beta-transmutation and Os-187 electron capture rates. Results indicate that the Re-187 - Os-187 pair allows for an age of the Galaxy on the order of 11-15 billion years, consistent with the chemical evolution model. It is noted, however, that Re-187 - Os-187 cannot yet be regarded as a truly reliable chronometer due to uncertainties in the present solar-system Os/Re ratio and the Os-187 s-process yield.
