Data of vertical sounding obtained at the Mirnyi (Antarctica) station during the May-August periods of 1968 and 1969 are used to examine the daytime variations of electron density. It is shown that electron-density gradients are closely connected with field-aligned currents in the cusp: density peaks observed in morning and midday hours correspond to outflow currents, while sharp drops in density observed in midday and afternoon hours correspond to inflow currents.
