Modified semiempirical and approximative semiclassical calculations of Stark widths for Si II and Si III lines are performed in order to test both methods by comparing the results with recently measured Stark widths. It is concluded that both methods can be used to estimate the Stark widths in the case of transitions between configurations with the core S(1). For transitions between configurations with the core P(3), a factor of two difference exists between approximate semiclassical and modified semiempirical results, indicating that the semiempirical Gaunt factors are too small in this case to compensate for the strong collision and higher order multiple interaction yield to the width. Other contributing factors to the disagreement are strong configuration interaction effects and autoionization effects.
