For the compilation of a list of all known T Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars (in the course of the preparations for the Catalog of Stellar Groups, Part II, by M. Jaschek and C. Egret) a reliable definition of these two stellar groups had to be invoked. Both groups have shown to be difficult to define in the past, and there is no really satisfying definition in the literature. In this paper the authors try to give up-to-date working definitions avoiding the shortcomings of earlier attempts.
