It is demonstrated that because of noise, the distribution of repeated measurements of normalized Stokes parameters is not normal, generally exhibiting both skewness and kurtosis with the former possibly introducing systematic errors in the determinations of mean values. In the limiting case for which the accuracy of the measurements is controlled by the noise of photon counting statistics, it is shown that the distribution, although symmetric, suffers positive kurtosis. However, except for circumstances which provide low photon counts per sample, the differences from normality are small, hardly affecting the standard determinations of confidence intervals. Attention is also drawn to the diversity of ways by which normalized Stokes parameters are calculated.
