Almost any telescope can be used in conjunction with a simple star spectroscope to make visual observations of stellar spectra. Indeed, some observations can be made with nothing more sophisticated than a replica transmission grating held between eye and eyepiece. North1 has even suggested the use of net curtain material placed over the telescope aperture. Visual studies have no objective scient ific value, but the exercise is nevertheless an instructive and fascinating one.
