At the dawn of the year 2001, Jupiter was studied in a unique dual flyby by two great interplanetary probes: Galileo and Cassini. Galileo has been in orbit round Jupiter for 5 years, and although it has very close views on each perijove, it can only transmit a limited amount of data due to its stuck antenna. Cassini was flying past Jupiter to pick up speed en route to Saturn, and although it did not come very close, it was able to send copious images in many wavebands, including some never used before. The flybys were timed so that the two spacecraft could make integrated observations, both of the atmosphere and of the magnetosphere.
