Between 1850 and 1924 a number of amateur astronomers were active in popular astronomy in Australia. By responding to public enquiries, maintaining local time services, offering public viewing nights, submitting astronomical information to newspapers, publishing books and pamphlets, and presenting public lectures and courses on astronomy they were able to significantly increase the astronomical literacy of the general population.
