An overview of the calibration process for spacecraft-borne particle sensors is given. Calibrating an instrument involves measuring the instrument response function by using an ion beam with well-defined properties. This is done in the laboratory. In flight, adjustments have to be made for sensor degradation or unexpected problems. Computer modeling of the instrument is an effective tool to understand data, ghost peaks, or cross talk. Recalibration with the flight spare unit is also an option to better understand flight instrument data.
