The author discusses the calibration processes of millimeter and submillimeter astronomical observations on the basis of the standard chopper-wheel method. Intensity scale can be established for both the single sideband and double sideband modes using an ambient-temperature calibrator. Ground-based observations are generally affected by variation in atmospheric opacity at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. This effect is especially serious for the double sideband receiver. Possible errors resulting from the atmospheric effect over different IF range are discussed and a plausible error range is estimated. It is emphasized that single sideband calibration is an effective method of reducing intensity errors within 10% when the atmospheric opacity is significant. Finally, the author proposes a configuration of double sideband reception with single sideband calibration as an alternative solution to the single sideband reception in millimeter and submillimeter observations.
