In October 1998 the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) obtained a long exposure spectrum of the QSO J2233-606 --- the main target of the Hubble Deep Field-South campaign. A total of 68.1 hours were spent obtaining data with the STIS MAMA and CCD detector covering 1140 -- 3565 Angstroms at resolutions of 15 -- 550 km/s. We report on the number, column density, and evolution of the absorption line systems seen in the spectrum and, in particular, on the Lyman limit system at z 1.9\ first detected in a STIS observation made in October 1997. The current STIS data give us access to a redshift range, not previously surveyed, where the number of Lyα \ absorbers per unit redshift is known to undergo a change in slope. We report on the implications of this for cosmology. A major advantage of the Hubble Deep Field project is the synergy introduced by the combination of echelle spectral observations and deep imaging from both space and ground. Using these data, we discuss possible correlations between absorption features seen in the QSO spectrum and those galaxies whose redshifts have been determined in follow-up ground-based work. Drawing on the column density and metallicity of the absorbers, and impact parameter of each galaxy from the QSO line-of-sight, we outline the importance of our work for other QSO spectroscopic studies.
