The introduction of the physics of atomic collision processes into the interpretation of astronomical phenomena took Astronomy beyond simple considerations of local thermodynamic equilibrium into the discipline of Astrophysics. An account will be given of the evolving role of atomic collision physics in Astrophysics to the central place it occupies today.
