A number of arguments, both observational and theoretical, suggest that
most galaxies have been shaped at least in part by interactions and
mergers with other galaxies. Here I summarize the growing observational
evidence for this hierarchical model of galaxy formation and evolution,
focusing on properties of the nearby galaxy population.
