A review of developments since 1955 in theoretical ideas concerning the large-scale structure and evolution of the universe and observational tests of these ideas is presented. Theoretical interpretations of the nebular redshift are analyzed and cosmological models are examined in detail. Observational tests of these models are discussed. It is concluded that the evidence for the conventional physical theory and world model is substantial, although the theory is still open to possible change depending on future observations.
