I briefly discuss methods for detecting and measuring magnetic fields in interstellar and intergalactic space. Some recent results are illustrated for magnetic fields in the Milky Way, galaxy outflow halos, galaxy clusters and the intergalactic medium beyond clusters. The general trend of recent observations is that magnetic fields at significant strengths are increasingly found to be present in the diffuse extragalactic gas wherever observational techniques permit them to be seen. This is due to recent improved sensitivity in detecting diffuse radio synchrotron radiation, Faraday rotation, diffuse X-ray emission, and X-ray emission lines. The sensitivity of all of these is improving, and will be supplemented by detections of UHECR's and extragalactic gamma rays with the coming generation of instruments in these bands. This talk concentrates on what we have learned thus far, and on some of the wider astrophysical connections and implications. .
