An analysis is presented of published Soviet spaceprobe mission plans to Mars, as well as an evaluation of technology readiness issues associated with the implementation of a large Mars lander/rover carrying a large sensor and experiments suite. Moscow Space Research Institute literature characterizes the first of a series of Mars missions as involving two spacecraft that will be launched by Proton boosters in October, 1994; interception of Mars will occur after some 300 days. This mission will demonstrate such vital techniques for subsequent Mars surface sampling missions as an earth-return section and aerobraking upon arrival at Mars in August, 1995 in preparation for the entry of the required orbital slot.
