The issues of tectonic and volcanic modifications of the Rhean surface are presented here in separate descriptive and interpretive sections. The first section reexamines Rhean scarps, ridges, troughs, and other volcano-tectonic features and proposes a purely morphologic (i.e., nongenetic) classification. Then, the geometry and the azimuthal distribution of these features are discussed. These observational constraints form the basis for the second interpretive section, which discusses the implications of these morphologic features (and the implications of their orientation) for the tectonic and volcanic history of Rhea.
