An expression is obtained for the spatial-temporal distribution of the field produced by a pulsed ionospheric or ground-based source. In the case of the ionospheric source, a localized pulse appears whose maximum travels along the earth's surface with a velocity significantly less than the Alfven velocity. The earth-crust source is connected with the diffusion spreading of disturbances. Differences in the structure of the vertical and horizontal components of the signal are examined.
