Systematics encountered in the analysis of low-resolution IUE images of the BL Lac type object Mrk 421 are presented. Analysis suggests that a number of systematic uncertainties are likely to be present in low-resolution IUE spectra of weak sources. These may lead to substantial discrepancies between different estimations of the UV continuum for the same data set. In the study of BL Lac type objects, a slit width of 12.8 pixels was adopted in order to integrate over the maximum amount of the source signal (at the expense of a reduction in signal-to-noise) and to coincide with that used in most calibration derivations. In the absence of spectral curvature or rapid variability, a power-law fit to the combined long- and short-wavelength data sets gives the most reliable estimate of the spectral shape in the UV.
