During a study of the energy distribution of Blazars, the BL Lac objects PKS 0048-09 and PKS 0422+00 were observed in 1987 with IUE. Simultaneous optical and near-IR spectrophotometry gives a detailed energy distribution from 8 times 10 to the 13th power to 2.5 times 10 to the 15th power Hz. For PKS 0048-09, which in 1987 Aug. was in a relatively bright state (V = 15.5), a single power law with alpha nu = 1.00 + or - 0.01 can be fitted to the data over the whole spectral range; comparing with previous optical-IR observations a spectral hardening Delta alpha = 0.51 + or - 0.06, corresponding to an intensity increase of 1.2 mag is apparent. For PKS 0422+00 a marked steepening (Delta alpha = 1) from IR to UV frequencies is found in both brightness states observed (1987 Aug.: V = 16.2; 1988 Jan.: V = 15.6). The recorded intensity variation is close to a factor of 2 in the UV range, reduced to 10 pct to 20 pct in the IR. This, being accompanied only by a mild hardening (Delta alpha = 0.1) of the optical to UV continuum, suggests a harder break frequency in the higher state.
