The ultraviolet continuum and emission line characteristics of AM Her (polars) and DQ Her (intermediate polars) were analyzed. The UV energy distribution is compared to different emitting contributions: the UV flux most probably results from X-ray heating of the column and of the surface of the white dwarf but cannot be explained by cyclotron radiation. The emission line intensities of the different systems are compared. The resonance line intensity ratios are similar for both classes and are generally in accordance with what is expected from photoionization by soft X-rays. However two of these systems exhibit anomalous ratios, tentatively interpreted as due to abnormal abundances of carbon and nitrogen.
